We’ve worked with hundreds of companies around the UK over the years, shooting company-wide staff headshots. The size of the teams we have shot vary from everything in between 2 and 3,000 members of staff! There are many reasons why companies choose to photograph their staff and in this article we’re going to look at the top ten reasons why companies get staff headshots.

1: Internal Comms

By far, this is the most common reason we shoot company-wide staff headshots for large companies. Most large companies will use some sort of internal comms platform (such as Slack, Teams, Workplace and Sharepoint) where staff members can have a profile picture. Many companies prefer their staff to have uniform headshots on their internal comms systems, so we’re often called in to capture everyones image for this reason.

2: The ‘Meet The Team’ page

As the saying goes “people like to buy from people”. What better way is there to introduce potential customers to your team than a ‘meet the team’ page on your website? After internal comms, webpages are the most common reason we are commissioned to shoot staff headshots for a company. A lot of the time, this is done alongside a new website being built, and we’ll work with a companies design agency to make sure the style of the headshots fits in with the company logo and overall look and feel of the website.

3: Employee Engagement

Since covid, employee engagement is a high priority in large businesses. Coming up with engaging ideas to lure staff back into the office is a challenge faced by lots of HR departments. Staff headshot days are a great, highly engaging way to encourage staff into the office. One of the bonuses of this is that a session with us leaves people feeling good about how they look, which can lead to increased morale and productivity. Win win!

4: LinkedIn Profiles

We have taken a huge amount of headshots for LinkedIn. In a world ruled by digital engagement, your LinkedIn profile photo is a chance to remind people that there is a living, breathing human being behind your online persona. Statistics also show that LinkedIn members with a photo receive far more engagement- 21 times more profile views and 9 times more connection requests!

5: Trade Publications

If your company engages in PR activity, having a library of images to call upon for trade publications, press releases and news articles is a must. If you are looking at getting staff headshots for a trade publication or news article, we actually suggest shooting them in more of a portrait style (if you’re not sure what the difference between a headshot and a portrait is, click here). The main reason for this is that you will be making the publications’ designer life easier if you shoot with some negative space, which in turn will most likely result in you getting more column inches.

6: Guest Speaking Opportunities

If you, or a member of your staff, have a guest speaking opportunity in the pipeline, you are going to need a professional headshot. Usually the organisers of the event you are speaking at will ask for this ahead of the event so that they can use it in their promotional material. Similarly to shooting for trade publications, it’s best to have a few different headshot/portrait options to submit for a guest speaking opportunity, as it gives the designers working on the marketing collateral more room for movement.

7: Boost Staff Confidence

Getting a professional headshot can be a confidence-boosting experience for your staff. Especially when the session is carried out by an experienced photographer and the finished images have been professionally retouched. A session with us leaves people feeling good about how they look, which can lead to increased morale and productivity.

8: Increase Communication

When employees have a professional headshot, they are more likely to use it on their internal comms profile, LinkedIn profile and other platforms. This can help to improve communication and collaboration within the company and also externally. As mentioned earlier in this article, statistics show that LinkedIn members with a photo receive far more engagement.

9: It’s Fun!

This is never really a sole reason for a company to get headshots of their staff, but we’re adding it to the list anyway!  A headshot day in the office creates a bit of a buzz and having a professional headshot taken can be a fun experience- even for those that hate having their picture taken (which by the way is most people!)

10: It Makes Your Company Look Good

In more ways than one, having professional headshots of your staff makes your company look good. It shows that you are prepared to invest in your staff and makes them look professional too. Uniform company-wide headshots can also be a way to fly the flag of your brand if you use your brand colour as the background for example.

So there you have it. Those are the top ten reasons why companies get staff headshots. Very often, a company will be getting them for a combination of the above, for example “we’re going to use them on our internal comms platform and everyone’s LinkedIn”.
